CHCANYS EM Team has been engaging in citywide healthcare emergency preparedness activities spearheaded by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH).
On May 30, 2019, we attended the fourth and final meeting of the DOHMH’s Health Care Coalition (HCC) Leadership Council for this funding cycle, where CHCANYS had a pleasure to also make a short presentation.
Here are the highlights from the meeting. You can also access all presentation slides from segments below HERE.
NYC HCC Leadership Council - Meeting #4:
This meeting was jointly hosted by DOHMH and the Brooklyn Coalition (TBC). The meeting was held at the SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. All attendees were welcomed by William Lang, DOHMH's Director for Health Care Coalitions, who was followed by SUNY Downstate Medical Centerstaff - Bonnie Arquilla, Director of Emergency Prepared and Keydron Guinn, Sr. VP and Chief of Staff, providing opening remarks.
This meeting was interesting in that it included a table-top exercise (TTX) as part of the program. This TTX introduced participants to evaluation combination of proposed NYC Pediatric Multi-Casualty Incident (MCI) Plan, and NYC Burn Surge Plan. The robust discussion was followed by a debrief moderated by Dr. Joseph Freedman of NYC's Kings County Hospital. Dr. Freedman also offered general concepts and tips on how to conduct debriefings generally and specifically for exercises.
The afternoon portion of the program included a so-called "Ignite Session", i.e. a series of mini-presentations (5 minutes each) offered by NYC HCC's Network and Subject-Matter Expert Coalitions. Each invited coalition presented their work and accomplishments in this budget period and laid out some next steps for themselves. The following coalitions presented:
MediSys Health Network
Montefiore Emergency Preparedness Coalition
Mount Sinai Health System Emergency Management Partnership
NYC Health + Hospitals
NYU Langone Health
NY Presbyterian Healthcare System
Subject-Matter Expert Coalitions:
North HELP Coalition
Pediatric Disaster Coalition (PDC)
Joint presentation by Continuing Care Leadership Coalition (CCLC), Southern NY Association (SNYA) and Greater NY Health Care Facilities Association (GNYHFA)
As mentioned above, CHCANYS had a pleasure to give a short overview of our work and who community health centers were to the members of the HCC and remind all attendees about the importance of including health centers into citywide planning. Additionally, we provided a quick glance at some of the activities in the last year and offered a glimpse into the future activities for primary care. You can access the slides from our presentation HERE.
The day finished with an update on measles by Dr. Timothy Styles, Medical Director for the Office of Emergency Preparedness and Response (OEPR) at DOHMH.
Dr. Celia Quinn, Executive Director of OEPR, DOHMH finished the day with an overview of the HCC Charter and Response Plan. She also gave final remarks of the day and adjourned the meeting.
